about

The germs of this piece were a rapid descending riff written during a Seattle October rainshower (repeated a few times near the beginning) and a peaceful melody that came to me near the end of a long bike ride through the Catskills that passed through Shutters Corners, New York. I had been working hard as the Russian folding bicycle was not very efficient, and it was near sunset as I coasted into the village near the end of the ride. The more angst-ridden parts of this piece reflect the state of unrequited love I was in at that time, and the piece concludes with the peace I made with that. For a CD release concert for my first album (on which this piece appears as a piano solo), I wrote a part for Paul McCandless which he played then; we finally recorded it years later for this album.
